In the food industry, meeting regulatory and industry requirements to ensure the safety and quality of food products is crucial. To achieve this, companies must collaborate with a food testing lab that employs the latest cutting-edge techniques, holds the highest international accreditations, and staffs experts who can provide tailored solutions for enhancing product preservation and regulatory compliance processes.
Heavy Metals in Food and Water
Food manufacturers and producers closely monitor the levels of arsenic, cadmium, mercury, and lead in their products due to the high toxicity of these heavy metals. Various factors can contribute to the presence of heavy metals in food, and the only way to ensure that products meet regulatory requirements and fall within acceptable limits is through heavy metal food testing.
The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has established action levels for certain heavy metals in food products. For example, activity levels have been set for arsenic in apple juice, rice cereals intended for infants, and lead-in candy that young children may frequently consume. Furthermore, the FDA has established activity levels for cadmium and lead in pottery ceramics and silver-plated hollowware. To maintain food safety standards, the FDA has refused entry of some imported food products into the US due to the presence of heavy metals. These products include
- Bottled Water – Arsenic
- Dietary Supplements – Arsenic, Cadmium, Mercury, and Lead
- Ceramic ware – Cadmium and Lead
- Preserved Duck Eggs – Lead
- Dried Fruits – Lead
- Turmeric – Lead
- Mandarin Orange Float Drink – Lead
- Candy – Lead
- Chili Containing Granular Seasonings/Snack Foods – Lead
